THE LABOR STAGE
SATURDAY, MAY 25, 7pm CORNISH PLAYHOUSE
Rebel Voices, aka Susan Lewis and Janet Stecher, have been a duo since 1989 They draw their inspiration from the Wobbly tradition as rabble rousers, unionists and artists, singing out for social and economic justice with passion and humor.
Jim Page has been a fixture in Seattle since the early 70’s. Carrying his guitar like a sack of tools he left his mark on every square inch of town. Every theater, cafe, rock and roll bar, and sidewalk street corner was a stage, until a cop came by to shut him down. But he wouldn’t shut so easy. So in 1974 he sang to the City Council that street music should be free and legal and they should overturn an old backward law against it and they did.
Our play, “Labor for Palestine”, weaves stories about how the labor movement began to embrace the ceasefire movement. Written and directed by our own Ed Mast, and drawing on the experience of Starbucks Workers United and UFCW Local 3000, we tell the story of how rank and file power and unity can move the needle of justice just a little bit.
The Seattle Labor Chorus was born at FolkLife when they performed with Pete Seeger in 1997. They’ve been taking their message of solidarity to picket lines and concert halls ever since.
Who is She, comprised of members of Tacocat, Lisa Price and Chastity Belt join us on the labor stage for the first time. Known for many things, but notably, for their musical critique of Amazon overlord Jeff Bezos, which famously caused a local hockey scandal that made headlines, when they were fired on their opening night as the house band for the Seattle Kraken.
